CodeAcademy week 1

Finished up my first week of CodeAcademy this past thursday. I feel like I’ve been drinking from a fire-hose.

I finally had the opportunity to sit down today and fully set up my Ruby work environment. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Ruby and Python both come preinstalled on mac OSX. Pretty sweet. No setup required!

As I was reviewing the lessons from last week, I took a screenshot of my desktop. I feel somewhat legitimized as a wannabe coder. I deliberately chose the green font against the black background in terminal because it feels more hackerish. It’s like I’m plugging into the matrix!

Last week we had an assignment to complete the TryRuby tutorial before our thursday morning class. However I was so sleep deprived from working on other classes the previous night that I felt like a zombie – just going through the motions. Nothing was making sense. By the end of the third chapter, I was literally copy pasting code into the command prompt just to make it through to the end. Don’t think I learned that much. But my vague recollection of the tryruby tutorial made alot more sense by the time I actually finished the thursday class. So I’m still glad I did it!

I revisited tryruby again today. So much clearer. The last two chapters were still a bit tricky though. I will need to try this again at a later date.

This week we learned how to use:

  1. Lists
  2. Arrays
  3. Hashes
  4. Simple looping statements

and a shit ton of keyboard shortcuts. Good stuff.
